Featured Exhibit: John M. Oram & The Organ Church Divide
When Captain Jefferson Peak donated money to build Dallas’s first Christian church, he never expected what would happen next. Church secretary John M. Oram — Dallas’s first jeweler and future inventor of the Oram Time Machine — donated an organ to the new congregation. Peak was furious, believing instrumental music to be sacrilegious. Each Sunday the congregation divided into organ supporters and anti-organ factions, sitting on opposing sides of the church. Peak and his followers, including the minister, eventually left to hold services at Field’s Opera House, established by Peak’s son-in-law. The organ stayed.
